a love letter

In 2015 my life changed forever. I was seeing this new person and we were getting to know each other. We had electronic music as a vague interest in common, but I was never really able to articulate what that meant outside of "I like eurobeat when I'm feeling peppy and trance when I'm feeling tender".

For context, I went to my first rave in 2005 when trance was everything and everywhere. I had just missed the bulk of the raving "glory days", but I still had fun and my experiences helped shape me into who I am today. However, I didn't get that halcyon experience. My partner, on the other hand, got to tromp through the grassroots rave scene full throttle and had a very well rounded knowledge base on who's who and what to listen to. I, being less-rave-blessed, had a playlist of random stuff I liked, but I couldn’t tell you I liked acid resonance or a good cosmic sweep. Don’t ask me about my opinions on Bigbeat - never heard of her.

One fateful, shimmering (& dirty wonderful) night, Cowgirl was brought up on YouTube and I was…rattled. Infected. Changed. I suddenly grasped what "progressive" meant - until that point it was a vague term for long songs. Forget headfirst, I was in heartfirst.

a light glow over the horizon

A few months later, this person and I made the bonehead descision to move to a new province together. We were four or so months into this new relationship. Our Barbara Barbara We Face a Shining Future CD got heavy play as we gazed out over a new, much ocean-er, horizon. As we built our new coastal life, Barbara Barbara became our soundtrack to being brave and open and kind of dumb. I will forever treasure it.

11 years later, I now call that person my spouse. We are still a little dumb, but we're much better at hiding it. Most of the time. Um. Huge caveat needed. So here's the thing: when you have two megafans enabling one another, it can toe the line of dumb very closely. We are committed to seeing Underworld every chance possible. We'd like our opportunities to see them to be a lot more, but we're grateful for what we've gotten so far. In 2020, we had tickets to see them in Toronto for their Drift tour. When that was cancelled, I wept, snot streaks and everything. It took a while, but 2025 was finally the year we made it work. We might have gone overboard, flying around America making it happen. At one point, a friend took off her sunglasses to look me directly in the eyes to say "that's crazy. You know that's crazy, right?".

Oh, I do. I am unwell over these men and their music and I sometimes don't know what to do with this love except bleed it out. So here we are. Hands on my bloody heart. crazycrazycrazycrazy
