英国ユース·カルチャーの ひとつの象徴となった映画 「トレインスボッティング」 を印象的にバックアップした のは、アンダーワールドの “ボーン·スリッピー”だ。彼 らは映画のテーマの一つでも ある“ドラッグ”と音楽の関 係について主に語った。ーあなた達にとって、90年代はどういう時代でしたか?

「成長の時期だったと思う。すごく良い方向にね。他に何て言えばいいんだろう …… すごいスピードで去っていったからさ。忙しかったし」
カール·ハイド(以下K)「僕らにはいい時代だった」
ー90年代といえばダンス·カルチャーですが、エクスタシーはイギリスの文化を変えたと思いますか?
D「それは勿論。でも音楽に はドラッグが付き物さ。60年 代もそうだった。エクスタシ ー·カルチャーとダンス·ミ ュージックが出会って爆発が 起きたんだ。正直言ってエク スタシーがなかったら、ダン ス·ミュージックは今ほどの 勢いはなかったはすだね」
K「気づいたことは、」
D 「 み ん な が お 互 い に ってたこと?」
K「そう、ビールを飲み過ぎ てケンカしたりすることがな くなった。サッカーの観戦席での雰囲気も変わったと思うよ。みんなリラックスして」
D「誰もが外へ遊びに行きたくなるような気持ちにさせた]
K「そう。勿論質の悪いドラッグをやって死んだ人もいるけど、それより酒で死んだ人 の方が遙かに多い。エクスタ シーだけ悪もの扱いするのは おかしいよ」
D「僕なんかエクスタシーな んてやったことないよ …… と、 とりあえず母親がこの記事を 読むかも知れないからそう言 っておこう(笑)」
ー90年代で最も気に入った アルバムは?
K「最も気に入った一枚かど うかはおいといて、結構好き だったのはビースティ·ボー イズの“サボタージュ”かな」
D「好きなアルバムのトップ 100には絶対に入るアルバムだよね(注:“サボタージュ” はシングル)」
ー90年代生まれで、あなた の生活に欠かせないものは?
D「エクスタシー(笑)。いや、 テクノロジーかな」
K「欠かせないものなんてな いんじゃないかな。なければ ないで、なんとかなるもんだ よ。物質に執着しすぎると問 題が生じる。人間って環境に 順応しやすい生き物なんだ。 何かがなければ生きて行けな い、なんて状況は悲しすぎる よ。人間がそんなに愚かなも のだとは思わないね」

Underworld’s “Born Slippy” provided a striking musical backdrop for the film *Trainspotting*, which became an icon of British youth culture. The group spoke primarily about the relationship between music and drugs—one of the film’s central themes.
What kind of era was the 90s for you?
Darren Emerson (D): "I think it was a time of growth. In a really good way. What else can I say... It just flew by at such high speed. We were busy, after all."
Karl Hyde (K): "It was a good era for us."
When you think of the '90s, you think of dance culture; do you think Ecstasy changed British culture?
D: "Absolutely. But drugs have always gone hand-in-hand with music—it was the same in the '60s. It was the collision of Ecstasy culture and dance music that caused the explosion. Honestly, without Ecstasy, dance music wouldn't have the momentum it has today."
K: "One thing I noticed was..."
D: "That everyone was getting along with each other?"
K: "Right—people stopped getting into fights from drinking too much beer. I think the atmosphere in the football stands changed, too; everyone was just more relaxed."
D: "It made everyone want to go out and have a good time."
K: "Exactly. Of course, some people died from taking bad-quality drugs, but far more people died from alcohol. It’s unfair to single out Ecstasy as the bad guy."
D: "Personally, I’ve never even tried Ecstasy... well, I’d better say that, just in case my mum reads this article (laughs)."
What was your favorite album of the '90s?
K: "Setting aside whether it was my absolute favorite, I really liked the Beastie Boys' 'Sabotage'."
D: "That’s definitely an album that would make it into a top 100 list. (Note: 'Sabotage' is a single.)"
For someone born in the 90s, what is something indispensable to your life?
D: "Ecstasy (laughs). No, actually, I’d say technology."
K: "I don't think there’s anything truly indispensable. If you don't have something, you just find a way to manage. Problems arise when you get too attached to material things. Humans are creatures that adapt easily to their environment. The idea that you couldn't go on living without a specific thing—that’s just too sad. I don't think humans are that foolish."
